Councils play a central role in delivering faster housing approvals. To recognise council achievements towards innovation, customer service and assessment efficiency, a series of awards were presented to high achieving councils on behalf of the NSW Premier, Planning Institute of Australia NSW (PIA NSW) and Local Government NSW (LGNSW).

Local Government NSW Award

The Local Government NSW Planning Awards were sponsored by the Department of Planning and Environment and presented by Minister for Planning Anthony Roberts on 24 October 2017. The awards recognised individuals and councils who demonstrated excellence in planning and development services.

Winners

Excellence in Leadership (Individual)

  • Division A: Outstanding individual contribution – Metropolitan Council Andrew Watson, Ku-ring-gai Council
  • Division B: Outstanding individual contribution – Large Regional Council Scott Cox, Central Coast Council
  • Division C: Outstanding individual contribution – Rural/Regional Council Mark Dicker, Blayney Shire Council.

Culture Change Innovation/Excellence (Team or Council)

  • Division A: Metropolitan Council Sutherland Shire Council, E-submissions – The Civil Objection
  • Division B: Large Regional Council Port Stephens Council, Leading a Customer Centric Planning Culture – One Team at a Time
  • Division C: Rural/Regional Council Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Goulburn Mulwaree Employment Land Strategy.

The winners each received a monetary amount to put towards planning related training and education an institute of their choice.

The LGNSW awards will be held again in 2018.

Planning Institute of Australia NSW – Awards for Planning Excellence

This year, Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) NSW offered a new Innovation in Development Assessment award. This award provided recognition for a council that has implemented an innovative change to improve the efficiency of its development assessment practices, and delivered improved planning outcomes for the community and industry.

Innovation in Development Assessment

  • Awarded to Randwick City Council
  • Project: Online Lodgement of Development Applications

Commendation

  • Awarded to Mariam Fares, Alexandra Hafner, John Maunder, Kevin Nonweiler, Michael McCabe and Luis Melim
  • Bayside Council
  • Project: Bayside Council Workload Management Tool

Premier's Awards

The 2017 Premier's Awards for Public Service recognised councils' work and improvements in development assessment processes. As part of the judging criteria, consideration was given to how nominated projects and initiatives align with the principles in the Department's Development Assessment Best Practice Guide (PDF, 1.55 MB).

Winners

Making Housing More Affordable

This award category recognised councils who have worked on programs, initiatives, innovations or improvements that led to more housing approvals being determined within 40 days or supported state-led rezoning for 10,000 additional homes (on average per year) in appropriate areas to 2021, supporting the Premier's Priority of Making Housing More Affordable.
