An Energy from Waste facility uses thermal technology to convert waste that would otherwise go to landfill into steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity.

In 2015 the Department of Planning and Environment received and exhibited a development application and environmental impact statement (EIS) for an Energy from Waste facility at Eastern Creek. Since mid-2015, a considerable number of issues and questions around the proposal were raised by the independent experts the Department engaged, other government agencies, and the community.

In late 2016 through to 1 March 2017 the Department exhibited an amended EIS (part A, 7.7Mb and part B, 8Mb) which included a Response to Submissions Report (RTS) from the applicant:

Appendix HH1 - Response to community submissions

Appendix HH2 – Response to agency submissions

Appendix HH3 – Response to Flora and Fauna Issues

Feedback from the exhibition of the amended EIS included concerns about health risks, air quality, location of the facility and the suitability of the site. The applicant must now prepare a new RTS to address the concerns raised and to support an amended development application for the construction and operation of only Stage 1 of the proposal to process 552,500 tonnes of waste per annum.
