Inland Rail is a freight rail connection between Brisbane and Melbourne. The route will be approximately 1,700 kilometres in length - including over 1,000 kilometres of major upgrades and enhancements and over 500 kilometres of new track via regional Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.

 

The project is located in the existing rail corridor between the towns of Narrabri and North Star, via Moree, and involves:

  • Upgrading of approximately 188 kilometres of existing track and/or track formation;
  • Constructing five new passing loops at Bobbiwaa, Waterloo Creek, Tycannah Creek, Coolleearllee, and Murgo;
  • Replacing culverts and bridges, including removing the existing rail bridges over the Mehi and Gwydir Rivers and Croppa Creek and replacing them with new ones;
  • Constructing a new 1.6 kilometre section of rail at Camurra to bypass an existing hairpin curve;
  • Realignment of approximately 1.5 kilometres of the Newell Highway near Bellata and providing a new road bridge over the existing rail corridor; and
  • Constructing a new road bridge over the existing rail corridor at Jones Avenue, Moree.

 

Ancillary works will also be undertaken including improved stormwater drainage, upgraded signalling and communications, and new or improved rail corridor fencing.

 

The proponent for the project is the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC). ARTC has prepared an Environmental Impact Statement for the project, which is on public exhibition from 15 November to 15 December 2017.

 

The Commonwealth Department of Environment and Energy has determined the Narrabri to North Star project to be a controlled action under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. The project will be assessed under the Assessment Bilateral Agreement.
