Following on from amendments made to the State Environmental Planning Policy (Affordable Rental Housing) 2009 in May 2011, the NSW Government announced the establishment of the Affordable Housing Taskforce to help drive new planning policies for delivering affordable housing and seniors housing, which meets community needs and respects local character.
The Taskforce Terms of Reference include assisting the NSW Government in establishing its new approach for delivering affordable housing. In November 2011, the Taskforce hosted an Affordable Housing Forum to engage with stakeholders about affordable housing solutions.
The Affordable Housing Taskforce is leading the development of initiatives to provide local strategies which will encourage a wide range of housing types meeting the needs of key workers, the homeless and other groups in housing need.
TASKFORCE
In July 2011 the NSW Government confirmed the members of the new Affordable Housing Taskforce and the group held its first meeting.
The Taskforce is harnessing the skills of external social planning experts to help drive new planning policies to deliver affordable housing, which meets community needs and respects local character. It is made up of experts with a range of backgrounds, including academics, planners, development groups, local government and the NSW Government.
The chair of the Taskforce is Andrew McAnulty, who brings to the Taskforce his significant expertise in large-scale community based redevelopment and urban regeneration in both the United Kingdom and Australia. Mr McAnulty is chief executive officer of national community housing provider MA Housing, which provides long term social and affordable rental housing to low and moderate income households.
The Taskforce is supported by Technical Reference Groups and Working Groups, comprising of representatives from local councils, government agencies, social housing experts and private sector.
