The Department is working closely with Campbelltown and Wollondilly Councils to investigate the possibility of releasing land for new homes and jobs in the Greater Macarthur area.

The Greater Macarthur Preliminary Land Release Strategy was released on 22 September 2015. The Preliminary Strategy identifies:

To find the best areas for new homes and jobs, we studied the local environment, mining and coal seam gas operations; in addition to existing planning proposals for land release.

With careful planning, we can maintain the area’s rural lifestyle and conserve heritage while creating opportunities to build new homes close to transport, infrastructure and services that meet the needs of local communities.

A local planning direction, issued by the Minister for Planning, will ensure future rezoning proposals are consistent with the Preliminary Strategy.

The Preliminary Strategy and related amendments to State Environmental Planning Policy (Sydney Region Growth Centres) 2006 were exhibited for public comment between 22 September and 18 November 2015.

Should the Preliminary Strategy and proposed amendments to the Growth Centre SEPP be approved, land at Menangle Park / Mount Gilead and Wilton will be released by the Minister for urban development. This will allow detailed planning work to rezone land to begin.
