The NSW Government made automatic fire sprinkler systems mandatory in all residential aged care facilities after the tragic nursing home fire in Quakers Hill in 2011. These laws took effect on 1 January 2013.
A number of facilities were required to meet an earlier deadline for retrofitting of fire sprinkler systems of 1 September 2014. The remainder of aged care facilities must retrofit fire sprinkler systems by 1 March 2016, unless granted a postponement by the Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Committee. Aged care providers are subject to strict reporting requirements and regular review.

Please note that not all of NSW's aged care facilities are listed on this page. Facilities shown are those subject to the sprinkler retrofit requirements.
Under certain circumstances the required completion date for the installation of fire sprinkler systems in aged care facilities can be postponed by the Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Committee.
A person who operates a facility may apply once to the Committee for a postponement of the facility’s completion date.
If approved, the Committee may postpone the installation completion date for the time lengths specified below:
Facilities cannot move between the categories of completion (1 September 2014 and 1 March 2016).

The existing completion date – for facilities where a person begins to operate the facility after 1 January 2013. (Note the existing completion date is either the nominated completion date or the date 12 months after the person begins operating the facility, whichever is the earlier.)
