The NSW Government made automatic fire sprinkler systems mandatory in all residential aged care facilities after the tragic nursing home fire in Quakers Hill in 2011. These laws took effect on 1 January 2013.

A number of facilities were required to meet an earlier deadline for retrofitting of fire sprinkler systems of 1 September 2014. The remainder of aged care facilities must retrofit fire sprinkler systems by 1 March 2016, unless granted a postponement by the Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Committee. Aged care providers are subject to strict reporting requirements and regular review.

The Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Committee monitors the overall progress of the retrofit program for fire sprinkler systems. For more information on timelines and the framework for this work see:

Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Reports

Aged care facilities that nominated 1 March 2016 as their deadline to install fire sprinkler systems were required to submit progress reports for these installations in September 2015. The information for the facilities on this page is current as of September 2015 – some installations may have progressed since aged care providers submitted this information.

Key terms are explained in Frequently Asked Questions.

Please note that not all of NSW's aged care facilities are listed here. This is because facilities which already have sprinklers installed and facilities which have nominated September 2014 as the deadline for retrofitting sprinklers did not have to submit implementation plans.

The guide to fire safety report requirements can help aged care providers and certifiers prepare a fire safety report as part of any application to postpone the completion date to install a fire sprinkler system.

The Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Committee’s 2015 Annual Report and Supplementary Report are now available.

The September 2015 progress reports for facilities installing fire sprinkler systems by 1 March 2016 are now available.

More details on facilities with the 1 March 2016 deadline can be found in the Fire Sprinkler Systems Implementation Reports – September 2015.
