Preliminary Regional Issues Assessment for Potential Coal and Petroleum Exploration Release Areas:

Strategic Release Framework

The Strategic Release Framework allows for the controlled, strategic release and competitive allocation of coal and petroleum (CSG) prospecting titles in New South Wales.

The new Framework is designed to provide greater clarity and transparency in decision making relating to where exploration activities may take place, and introduces a competitive process for determining who may undertake these activities.

More details about the Strategic Release Framework can be found at:

Draft Preliminary Regional Issues Assessment for Potential Coal and Petroleum Exploration Release Areas Guidelines

The Strategic Release Framework recognises there are competing uses for land, and seeks to balance these interests. As a result, integral aspects of the Framework include community consultation and an upfront assessment of social, environmental and economic matters relating to a potential release area.

A Preliminary Regional Issues Assessment will not pre-empt the assessment and determination of mining projects.

The Department of Planning and Environment will be responsible for advising the Government about these social, environmental and economic matters. This is called a Preliminary Regional Issues Assessment.
