In July 2016, the Department of Planning and Environment, in partnership with the University of Queensland’s Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, undertook a series of engagement forums in a range of mining and resource communities across NSW. The Department held a forum with mining and extractive industry representatives in August 2016.


The purpose of these forums was to better understand how local communities experience the social impacts of major mining and resources projects and opportunities for improvement.

The feedback we received through these forums is summarised in the following reports:


This feedback has been used to inform the development of the Draft social impact assessment guidelines for State significant mining, petroleum production and extractive industry development, which are now on public consultation.
