Westside Mine Extension Approved: 23rd January 2003 Description: The Minister for Planning gave Oceanic Coal Australia Limited approval to extend the open cut Westside Coal Mine near Wakefield in the Newcastle Coalfield. The approval is for the extraction of steaming coal from the Great Northern and Fassifern Seams with a run of mine (ROM) of 8,000 tonnes per day (tpd) and an average ROM of 5,000 tpd. Coal would be crushed on site and then transported either to Eraring Power Station, Vales Point Power Station or Macquarie Coal Preparation Plant prior to export overseas.
