The campaign is in response to the recommendations of a working party on child falls established by the Children's Hospital Westmead (CHW). The department is assisting in the development of a further response to the working party recommendations.
The hospital has identified child falls from residential buildings as an increasing cause of injury. Each year in NSW around 8,000 children are taken to hospital because of a fall, including approximately 50 who have fallen from a window or balcony. For a small number of children, this fall will be fatal.
More than 40,000 brochures and posters have been distributed to the public via real estate agents, strata managers and community housing providers across NSW. The "Think Child Safe" brochures give tips to parents about how to make their home safe.
