Overview

The Department has worked with the local community, landowners and Ryde Council to identify opportunities to revitalise the Macquarie University Station precinct (Herring Road) to provide for new public spaces, shops, cafes, jobs and homes.


Key features of the new precinct plan include:

  • $5 million for Ryde Council to enhance open space parkland along Shrimpton Creek 
  • a new mixed use ‘academic core’ at Macquarie University, to closely integrate  academic and research activities with business and industry on campus
  • opportunities for renewal within a 800m radius of the railway station – with the taller buildings located close to the station
  • plans to secure funding upgrades for the bus interchange at Macquarie Shopping Centre.

 

Community consultation

The rezoning proposal for the Macquarie University Station (Herring Road) precinct was finalised in September 2015.

 

Feedback from the community has played an important part in developing the plans for the precinct. Consultation included:

  • forums with landowners and local community to develop ideas and design principles for the precinct
  • presentations and Q&A sessions at public meetings organised by City of Ryde
  • public exhibition of the draft proposal for public feedback
  • an online survey for community to provide input on local infrastructure priorities
  • three community drop-in sessions during the public exhibition period, including a session for public housing tenants at the Ivanhoe Estate.

 

 

Delivery program

In November 2012, the NSW Government endorsed Macquarie University Station (Herring Road) as a Priority Precinct.  
The precinct includes Macquarie University and Macquarie Shopping Centre, and is close to the employment opportunities offered by Macquarie Park.  The precinct is well serviced by public transport including bus services, the Epping to Chatswood rail line and in the future, Sydney Metro Northwest rail line.

 

The precinct will deliver up to 5,800 new homes by 2031, which will include the redevelopment of Ivanhoe Estate – transforming 259 existing social housing dwellings into a neighbourhood with at least 556 social housing dwellings.

 

The plans will transform the area into a vibrant centre that makes the most of the available transport infrastructure and the precinct’s proximity to jobs, retail and education opportunities within the Macquarie Park corridor.
