Media Release - Minister's Office Sydney: 18 March 2008 CONDOBOLIN CHURCH ON NSW STATE HERITAGE REGISTER Planning Minister Frank Sartor today announced the first State Heritage Register listing for the Lachlan Shire in the State’s Central West - All Saints Anglican Church at Condobolin.
Mr Sartor said the small church was built in 1878 and was reputedly the first brick building in the town.
“All Saints is a Gothic-styled church and is thought to have been designed by the famous colonial architect Edmund Blacket,” Mr Sartor said.
“Edmund Blacket built around 34 small churches of this kind throughout the state but this is the only one known to have survived in its original condition.”
The church has a full set of windows made by Lyon and Cottier – leading Australian stained glass manufacturers of the Victorian and Federation period.
“Adding to the church’s significance are its wooden pews thought to have been designed by Blacket and its elaborate ecclesiastical furniture carved in the 1920s,” Mr Sartor said.
“The Iemma Government recognises that this is not only a local landmark in the town of Condobolin but is an important NSW heritage site that should be protected for future generations.”
The church was nominated for listing by its owner the Anglican Diocese of Bathurst in association with its occupier, the Anglican Parish of Condobolin.
Listing on the State heritage register provides a legal framework for managing the approval of major changes to the listed item, so that the heritage significance is retained and not diminished.
