NSW GOVERNMENT APPROVES NEW TOURIST FACILITY FOR BEGA VALLEY

The Iemma Government has approved a concept plan for a new $55 million mixed tourist and residential development at Cattle Bay on the South Coast, including an increased setback from the foreshore to boost public access, Planning Minister Frank Sartor said today.

Mr Sartor said the proponent, Eden Resort Hotel Pty Ltd, is set to develop six precincts on a former tuna cannery site on Cattle Bay Road at Eden, in the Bega Valley local government area.

“This project is great news for the South Coast region as it will generate 350 jobs and boost the local economy,” Mr Sartor said.

“The original plans for the development outlined a 15 metre setback from the Cattle Bay foreshore but I did not think that was adequate.

“So I have attached a condition to my approval requiring that the plans increase the setback to a minimum of 30 metres for the entire width of the site’s foreshore boundary.

“This foreshore land will be dedicated to council as a public foreshore reserve which will provide better opportunities for public access and improved visual amenity to this popular coastal location.

“The existing former cannery building is setback only about five metres from the foreshore, so this proposal will open up this area to the public.

“To accommodate this change, the proponent will be required to reconfigure the floor plans of the conference centre and the hotel/serviced apartment precinct.”

Mr Sartor said the hotel, conference facilities and serviced apartments component of the development will provide important employment generation for Eden.

“The South Coast Regional Strategy outlines the need for sufficient employment land capacity to provide a projected 5,200 new jobs for the Bega area,” Mr Sartor said.

“This project will assist in reaching that goal over the next 25 years and will also benefit tourism.”

The Concept Plan includes:

• A tourist facility with a 60 room hotel (four storeys), 74 serviced apartments (four storeys), a conference building (two storeys) comprising function room and restaurant;

• 8 three-storey townhouses;

• 11 two-storey dwelling houses;

• 15 three-storey residential flat buildings comprising 41 units; and

• Identification of foreshore open space and riparian corridors.
