SYDNEYSIDERS TO START SHAPING FUTURE OF WESTERN SYDNEY HARBOUR TODAY

The most interactive consultation process in NSW Government history starts today, and will help inform the future uses of land and foreshore west of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Planning Minister, Kristina Keneally, today asked the people of Sydney to log onto www.shapesydneysforeshore.com and help the Government decide how to use Bays Precinct.

“Bays Precinct, as a whole, includes 80 hectares of NSW Government land, including five kilometres of harbour foreshore, located just two kilometres from the CBD,” Ms Keneally said.

“From today, Sydneysiders can use an interactive website and forum, express views about different parts of Bays Precinct, comment on each other’s views and have a genuine debate.

“The web-based component of the process makes it easy to have a say – people can log in from their own home. Of course anyone without internet access can also send their comments through the post.

“Through the consultation process, Sydneysiders will help decide a mix of working harbour, parkland, commercial or residential development, entertainment, art or sporting facilities for Bays Precinct.

“The NSW Government is asking the people of Sydney to particularly focus their attention on the future of White Bay, Glebe Island and White Bay Power Station.

“The potential of these areas is enormous and I look forward to hearing a diversity of views.”

Ms Keneally said the extent of the two phase consultation process reflects the fact that the harbour and its future uses is an issue that is important to all of Sydney.

“The first phase of the consultation process about Bays Precinct, including the online forums, will run until the end of October 2009,” Ms Keneally said.

“That will help establish long-term planning principles for Bays Precinct, as well as immediate opportunities for the area.

“The community will have an opportunity to comment on these planning principles during phase two of the consultation process, which will occur next year.”
