NEW EMPLOYMENT LAND BOOST FOR TAMWORTH

The NSW Government has today approved a new local environmental plan (LEP) which has the potential to create about 1,500 jobs in expanded employment lands west of the Tamworth CBD.

Department of Planning Acting Director-General Richard Pearson said about 24 hectares in the Taminda industrial precinct had been rezoned to general industrial and 12 hectares to business development.

“This rezoning will improve the supply of industrial land in Tamworth, support the creation of new jobs and boost economic development throughout the region,” Mr Pearson said.

“And it will help rejuvenate the existing Taminda industrial precinct.”

Mr Pearson said the rezoning had been the culmination of a major strategic planning exercise by Tamworth Regional Council.

The Department’s Tamworth office assisted the council and strongly supported the rezoning being approved by the NSW Planning Minister, Kristina Keneally.

The rezoning of the land has been made possible by the construction of new levee banks around the industrial area, which make previously flood-prone land available for industrial purposes.

Mr Pearson said the Department understood the council was working with sporting groups which may be affected by the rezoning, to ensure their sport activities could continue elsewhere in Tamworth.

“I would like to thank the council for its all its work on this initiative,” Mr Pearson said.

“This rezoning will help stimulate the Tamworth economy by making available land which will make it easier for prospective industries and businesses to enter the market.”
