Media Release - Department of Planning Sydney: 22 April 2009 UPPER LACHLAN SHIRE DRAFT LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN READY FOR EXHIBITION Upper Lachlan Shire Council has been given the go-ahead to begin community consultation and publicly exhibit its draft local environmental plan (LEP), the Council and the NSW Department of Planning announced today.
The draft plan was prepared by the Council with significant input from various State Government agencies and around $270,000 in financial assistance provided by the Department of Planning.
The Department’s Director-General, Sam Haddad, said that the LEP had been prepared using the standard LEP template which aims to clarify and simplify State planning controls.
“The standard template provides a consistent framework for the layout, zone names and definitions of new council-wide LEPs across NSW, which makes them easier to implement and understand,” Mr Haddad said.
“At the same time, councils still have the flexibility to incorporate local planning outcomes and strategies.”
Mayor for Upper Lachlan Shire, Councillor John Shaw, said that the draft LEP would allow appropriate opportunities for development, whilst ensuring the agricultural and environmental qualities of the Shire are not compromised.
“The draft plan is consistent with the Department of Planning’s recently released Sydney-Canberra Corridor Regional Strategy 2006-31, which seeks to build on the vitality and capability of centres within the Shire, and to ensure development occurs in a way that safeguards and enhances the natural environment,” Cr Shaw said.
“The public exhibition of the draft LEP is an important step in the planning process as it invites the local residents to comment on the plan to ensure it reflects the aspirations of the community into the future.
“The draft LEP will be placed on public exhibition for a period of three months from 20 May 2009.”
Mr Haddad commended the professionalism of the Council’s staff and elected representatives in preparing the draft plan in a proactive and timely manner.
