Media Release - Department of Planning Sydney: 1 September 2009 DRAFT TUMBARUMBA LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL PLAN 2009 READY FOR PUBLIC EXHIBITION Tumbarumba Shire Council has been given the go-ahead to publicly exhibit its draft comprehensive local environmental plan (LEP), Council and the NSW Department of Planning have announced.
The draft plan has been prepared by Council, with significant input from various State Government agencies along with around $130,000 in financial assistance from the Department of Planning’s Planning Reform Fund and from Council.
The Department’s Director-General, Sam Haddad, said that the LEP had been prepared using the standard LEP template which seeks to clarify and simplify State planning controls.
“The standard template provides a consistent framework for the layout, zone names and definitions in new council-wide LEPs across the State, making them easier to implement and to understand,” Mr Haddad said.
“At the same time, councils still have the flexibility to incorporate local planning strategies and address planning issues specific to the local area.”
Mayor for Tumbarumba Shire, Clr George Martin, said that he was extremely pleased to finally have the approval of the NSW Department of Planning and that this represented the culmination of several years of hard work and commitment by previous and existing councillors and staff who should all now be congratulated on this achievement.
“The release of the draft LEP will allow Tumbarumba Shire to continue to move forward with the progressive planning of the Shire,” Clr Martin said.
The draft plan includes a number of provisions that: • Provide opportunities for the growth of townships within the Shire including Tumbarumba, Khancoban and Jingellic; • Ensure the protection of important agricultural and horticultural lands; • Identify significant environmental and heritage values and ensure their protection into the future; • Establish appropriate processes for assessing and managing development in areas subject to natural constraints such as salinity, flooding and erosion; and • Recognise the important role of local industries such as the Hyne Timber Mill and protect their long term operation by avoiding conflict with land uses in the vicinity.
In particular, Tumbarumba’s draft plan establishes a framework to ensure that urban development occurs in a manner that safeguards the Shire’s important environmental, agricultural and natural resource assets.
Clr Martin said that the public exhibition was an important step in the process that provides residents the opportunity to voice their feedback on all aspects of the draft plan and ensure that it reflects the aspirations of the community into the future.
Mr Haddad commended Tumbarumba Shire Council on the progress it has made on the draft plan to date, and the timely manner in which it had been prepared.
The draft LEP will now go on public exhibition for a period of eight weeks commencing Wednesday 2 September 2009.
