NSW Coastline Cycleway - grants program

The NSW Coastline Cycleway program provides grants to non-metropolitan coastal councils to improve cycling facilities as part of the development of a cycleway along the entire NSW coast.

Based on a concept devised by the urban planner Elias Duek-Cohen, the 1400 kilometre NSW Coastline Cycleway, stretching from the Queensland border to the Victorian border, was defined in a set of five studies coordinated by Bicycle NSW and largely funded by the NSW Roads and Traffic Authority. The alignment aims to avoid major roads and highways and link together separate communities along the NSW coastline.

Grant funding is available to local councils for cycle projects on this route. Revisions to the route may be made with the support of the Department of Planning, councils, State agencies and local bicycle user groups to ensure that the route remains viable and current local priorities are accommodated. Maps showing the route are available from the Project Manager, whose details are below.

Applications for funding

A number of grants are offered each year with funding to be matched dollar-for-dollar by the participating councils. Applications for the 2010-11 round of funding are now open to eligible councils. Applications will be accepted until close of business on Friday 19 November 2010.

Update on funded projects

In 2009-10, a total of almost $1.3 million in grants was provided to 11 separate councils for 12 different cycleway projects and 7 kilometres of new cycleways will be constructed as a result of the funding.

Since it began in March 2003, the NSW Coastline Cycleway program has now funded 90 projects with grants of more than $9.3 million, resulting in the construction of more than 93 kilometres of cycleway.

Over 330 kilometres of the route (or nearly 25%) is now either in place or funded in the form of shared pedestrian/cycle paths or on-road cycle lanes along local streets.

The key benefits include improved and more sustainable transport choices, increased tourism, better coastal recreation access and the growth of bicycle-tourism industries.

The Coastline Cycleway also helps to achieve State Plan Priority E8 - more people using parks, sporting and recreational facilities.
