Population data and projections

An understanding of population growth and demographic change is essential to strategic infrastructure and service planning undertaken by government agencies and a wide variety of private sector organisations across New South Wales. The Department undertakes research into population change in the State and produces population projections data and a range of reports.

The Department of Planning, in consultation with the Population Projections Group, is responsible for producing the official New South Wales population projections for State government planning purposes. Projections are first produced at a State and regional level then developed for each statistical local area within each region.

Looking for transport data?

Please note that the Transport and Population Data Centre (TPDC) no longer exists within the Department following administrative changes within the NSW Government, which took effect in June 2007.
