The NSW Government is inviting feedback from community and industry on the directions and issues to be addressed in a coal and gas strategy for NSW. The Department of Planning is leading the preparation of the strategy with assistance from all key Government agencies including Treasury, Health, Environment, and Industry and Investment NSW, as well as community, industry and other stakeholder input.
Submissions
Aims of the strategy will be to:
· guide sustainable development of the coal mining and coal seam gas industry
· minimise adverse health, environment, agricultural and land use impacts of the industry
· strengthen communication between Government, industry and the community on coal mining and gas production matters.
· provide a brief overview of the industry and its potential growth over the next 25 years,
· identify the key environmental, economic, social, and health issues likely associated with growth in the coal mining and coal seam gas industry
· outline initiatives already being taken by the Government to address these issues
· promote community and stakeholder discussion to provide input to the development of the strategy.
A terms of reference paper has been developed for stakeholders, community, industry and the Government to lead the development of the Coal and Gas Strategy.
A reference group has been established to assist in developing the strategy. It comprises:
· Mining-related councils
· Total Environment Centre
· NSW Minerals Council
· Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association
· NSW Farmers Association
· Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union
· Nature Conservation Council of NSW
