The facts
- The NSW Government has been conserving open space corridors for recreation and the environment as part of a long term plan for over 30 years.
- The Western Sydney Parklands stretches for 27 kms from Blacktown to Liverpool along Eastern Creek and the hills of Hoxton Park – in size it is approximately 25 times bigger than Centennial Park.
- The Parklands is one of the biggest single urban parklands systems in Australia.
- In the last 10 years, significant progress has been made with the greening of the Parklands by planting over 700,000 trees and shrubs through the Greening Western Sydney program. The area will become even greener as these trees and shrubs mature and new plantings are established.
- The Western Sydney Parklands will be one of the first major parks established in Australia during the 21st century.
- The development of the Western Sydney Parklands is a long-term project.
- Approximately 92 percent of the Parklands is now in public ownership.
- In 2004 the NSW Government created The Western Sydney Parklands Management Vision
- In our contemporary communites many people struggle with health problems related to lifestyle such as heart disease, diabetes, mental illness, cancers and work related stress. Amongst children and adults obesity associated with poor nutrition and lack of exercise is a growing concern. The Parklands provide a place where communities can engage in pursuits that are compatible with healthy lifestyles.
- The Western Sydney Parklands Management Vision maps out the transformation of old farming paddocks to create accessible recreation areas and regenerate natural bushland and habitat for local wildlife.
- The Parklands already contains significant recreation resources equal to approximately 20 percent of the total area of the Parklands. Recreation resources in the area include: Nurragingy Reserve, Western Sydney Regional Park, Eastern Creek Raceway, Western Sydney International Dragway, Sydney International Equestrian Centre, Sydney International Shooting Centre, Blacktown Olympic Park and Prospect Reservoir.
- The Department of Planning will establish the Western Sydney Parklands Trust to manage the future development of the Parklands.
- Residential and employment lands, adjacent to the Parklands at Doonside and Huntingwood West are managed by Landcom, on behalf of the landowner, the NSW Department of Planning.
- Initial funds estimated at $45 million raised through the implementation of the residential development at Doonside, and the employment development at Huntingwood West, will be earmarked to assist with costs associated with developing Stage 1 of the Parklands.
- An additional $20M has been allocated towards new sporting facilities in Blacktown Olympic park
