On 15 February 2019, the Department issued an Official Caution to Stratford Coal Pty Ltd (SCPL), for ground disturbance beyond their approved limits.  While performing maintenance on the Avon North haul road, material removed from the haul road surface was pushed outside the approved disturbance boundary, encroaching on a biodiversity enhancement area.  An area of 155m2 was disturbed (and subsequently remediated) within the biodiversity enhancement area.  While the total area of disturbance was minimal, the Department investigation found that all reasonable and feasible measures were not taken to prevent/minimise harm to the environment.  SCPL have since taken additional measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident, including additional vegetation clearance and ground disturbance protocol training and additional signage of areas in close proximity to disturbance limits or environmentally sensitive areas.
