On 14 June 2019, the Department issued a $15,000 Penalty Notice to Centennial Northern Coal Services Pty Limited for failing to operate a real-time noise monitoring system as part of their on-site noise management system at Newstan Colliery.

The real-time noise monitor was not operating correctly on 25 June 2018 and had not been providing consistent and reliable results since installation in 2015.

Newstan Colliery has cooperated with the Department throughout the investigation and has since taken steps to procure a new real-time noise monitor.

Real-time noise monitors allow for proactive noise control to assist in compliance with noise limits and protect the amenity of surrounding neighbours.  The Department will continue to monitor compliance with the conditions of consent.
