The Sydney Football Stadium (commercially known as the Allianz Stadium) is located at Moore Park Sydney. The site is administered by the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust and is located next to the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Infrastructure NSW, on behalf of the NSW Government, lodged a State Significant Development application for the redevelopment of the Sydney Football Stadium with Department of Planning and Environment. The application includes a concept proposal for the development of a new stadium, and consent approval for stage 1 demolition works.

Our role

The Department of Planning and Environment plays an important role in assessing major projects in NSW, including State Significant Development (SSD) applications.

The Sydney Football Stadium redevelopment project is classified as SSD under the State Environmental Planning Policy (State and Regional Development) 2011, because it involves development for the purpose of a “recreation facility (major)” with a capital investment value (CIV) of more than $30 million.

Public exhibition of the proposal closed on 11 July 2018. The Department has received the applicant's Response to Submissions (RtS) document, which is now publicly available.

The concept proposal includes:

  • A maximum building envelope for the stadium to accommodate a basement and a new roof over all permanent seating;
  • Maximum stadium capacity of 45,000 seats (55,000 patrons in concert mode) and a new playing pitch;
  • Member areas, premium box/terrace, function lounge, and corporate suite operations;
  • Flood lighting, and stadium video screens;
  • Team, media and administration facilities, food and beverage areas;
  • Public domain works and landscaping; and
  • Identification of the existing Moore Park Carpark 1 (MP1) as the demolition and construction compound.

Additionally, the application includes consent approval for Stage 1 works comprising:

  • Demolition of the existing stadium including the existing Sheridan, Roosters, Waratahs, Cricket NSW Administration Building and Indoor Cricket Wickets to the existing slab level;
  • removal of 26 trees; and
  • the use of the MP1 car park as the demolition compound.

The concept proposal and stage 1 works will be assessed at the same time.

Following the assessment of the Concept Proposal and Stage 1 applications, Infrastructure NSW proposes to lodge a future development application to include detailed design of a new stadium, as well as the construction details, construction timelines and operational details.

Any future application will be lodged, exhibited and assessed having regards to the outcomes of the Department’s assessment of the concept development application.
