Martin Place Precinct Amending Concept Proposal

In March 2018, the Minister for Planning approved the Stage 1 State Significant Development (SSD) application for the Sydney Metro Martin Place Precinct.

The proposal from Macquarie Group included two commercial buildings (Over Station Developments) integrated with the previously approved Martin Place metro station. The proposed towers would be situated above the northern entrance (joining with the existing building at 50 Martin Place) and the southern entrance of the future station.

In May 2018, a site-specific amendment was made to the Sydney Local Environment Plan. The new planning provisions for the Martin Place Metro Precinct permitted a larger building envelope for the South site.

Macquarie Group submitted a ‘Stage 1 Amending Development Application’ (DA) to amend the concept for the Precinct, addressing the new planning controls for the South site.

The Martin Place Station Precinct proposal was identified as State Significant Development (SSD) and the Stage 1 Amending DA went through the SSD assessment process.

Stage 1 Amending DA approved

The Stage 1 Amending DA for the Martin Place Precinct was approved in February 2019, subject to conditions based on consultation with the local community, council and other agencies.

The Department carefully considered the community’s submissions, worked with council and took into account their feedback during the assessment process.

Next steps

Macquarie Group lodged two separate ‘Stage 2’ State Significant Development applications which seek approval for detailed design and construction for the North and South Over Station Development.

These applications were approved on 21 August 2019, subject to conditions based on consultation with the community, council and other government agencies.
