  • Date: 11.08.2016
  • Type: Departmental Media Release
  • Author: Department of Planning and Environment

A proposal by Hydro Aluminium Kurri Kurri Pty Ltd for the demolition and remediation of the former Hydro Aluminium Smelter at Kurri Kurri will be on exhibition from today for community consultation.

The Department of Planning and Environment is keen to hear the community’s views on the proposal, which seeks to:

  • demolish smelter buildings and structures
  • remediate contaminated soils, including materials within the capped waste stockpile (containing mixed smelter wastes) and contaminated soils around and below smelter structures
  • the design, construction and management of a waste containment cell that would encapsulate contaminated materials from the demolition and remediation activities, and
  • the treatment of contaminated groundwater.

A spokesperson for the Department of Planning and Environment said the local community always has an opportunity to share their views.

“Community consultation is an integral part of the planning process and the applicant will have to respond to the feedback we receive,” the spokesperson said.

“This feedback is taken into consideration as part of the assessment.

“It’s easy to participate by going online and we encourage everyone to take a look and have their say.”
