The vision
The new Meadowbank Education and Employment Precinct will have education at its heart while connecting students to training and employment opportunities with local industry and the surrounding community. It will be a safe and open place where students, employees and community members can access shared facilities and spaces, allowing them to engage.
The precinct will create opportunities for employees and enterprises to come together, and pilot a model of cooperation between education institutions and businesses that will ease student transition from school to the workplace.
What's happened so far
The Greater Sydney Commission prepared a master plan in collaboration with several state agencies and the City of Ryde Council. The agencies involved included Transport for NSW, School Infrastructure NSW, TAFE NSW and NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment.
The preliminary master plan was exhibited in late 2019 and invited members of the public to give their feedback. Based on the submissions, the community’s top priorities are:
- improved traffic management in the precinct
- better regional pedestrian access
- enhanced local pedestrian experience
- upgraded station precincts.
This feedback was taken into account and the final master plan features a strong focus on connectivity. For example, there will be local and regional pedestrian and cycle links, and improved transport services and vehicle access throughout the precinct.
The building of new primary and secondary schools next to the TAFE campus has begun, and once completed, will accommodate 2,500 students. Work is also well underway to create a multi-trade and digital technology hub on the TAFE site.
With an expected completion date of 2022, these projects will realise the precinct’s vision to transform Meadowbank into a centre of excellence for education and training.
What happens next
Arrangements have been made to guide the master plan’s implementation. This has involved creating working groups for infrastructure, education, employment and investment. Each has representatives from key stakeholders to make sure they achieve their target outcomes.
