The protection of openable windows is an important issue to be considered by home owners and building occupants. Each year, around 50 children fall from windows or balconies in Australia. Many suffer serious injuries. Sometimes these falls are fatal.

Certain new buildings require protection devices to be installed to specific openable windows in accordance with the National Construction Code. In existing buildings the safety of children around windows can be improved through the retrofitting of protection devices.

Additional requirements for provision of window safety devices apply to windows in a building subject to a strata scheme. For further information regarding this matter, please follow the link to NSW Fair Trading website.

The issues of child fall prevention and window safety are supported by initiatives of the Australian Building Codes Board and NSW Fair Trading. For handy tips on keeping your kids safe around windows and balconies, please visit the NSW Health website.
