[Children talking and working on projects]
Kelly Pfeiffer, Dark Sky Co-Creator, Dubbo School of Distance Education:
The Dark Sky project is a cross collaborative unit between the Department of Education and the Department of Planning NSW.
Ashley Clabecillas, Student, Lidcombe Public School:
And it focuses on Siding Spring Observatory, the critical light threshold and light pollution.
Kelly Pfeiffer, Dark Sky Co-Creator, Dubbo School of Distance Education:
We had fifty schools originally sign-up for the project and that has just expanded into possibly four thousand students across NSW.
Melissa McNair, Dark Sky Co-Creator, Dubbo School of Distance Education:
The results have been amazing, we have seen children grow in confidence we've seen their public speaking skills develop we've seen children come up with ideas that quite frankly adults couldn't come up with.
Matthew Lewis, Principal, Lidcombe Public School:
At Lidcombe Public School we're very lucky we've got an outstanding student body, they're very creative and they respond to things like this very very well.
Shalona Acharya, Student, Lidcombe Public School:
My highlight of working on this project was conducting interviews for my group because I got to dress up and act like a reporter.
Jackson Rennie, Student, Lidcombe Public School:
My favourite part was creating the website for our project that would be like a source of information about our solution and light pollution as a whole and the critical light threshold.
Aruna Pant, Teacher, Lidcombe Public School:
It felt emotional, it was, because I had seen how they'd started, I'd seen their struggle and then I'd seen their accomplishment so as a teacher it's always great to see all your kids driven to succeed.
Matthew Lewis, Principal, Lidcombe Public School:
I just think that these children will take this away with them and its one of the school events they'll remember for the rest of their lives.
