Local Character Lecture Series

The department hosted a series of lectures throughout 2018 to discuss the important role local character plays in the planning system. The lecture series included:

  • celebrating local character with Dominic Richards and Peter Poulet 
  • exploring local character and the role of community with James Best and Lucy Cole-Edelstein 
  • exploring local character, arts and culture with Professor Deborah Stevenson, Adjunct Professor Nigel Helyer in conversation with Elizabeth W. Scott
  • exploring the economic benefits of local character with Geoff Roberts in conversation with Marcus Spiller

Local Character Symposium

The department hosted a Local Character Symposium on 30 May 2018. Attendees heard from national and international experts on local character and place making. The discussion on the day was positive, with enthusiastic discussions on local character and its role within the planning system. The learnings from the Symposium have informed the preparation of a Local Character and Place Guideline.
