Greater Parramatta is fast emerging as the centre of Sydney and will experience significant growth and change over the next 20 years. To plan for this growth, we have worked closely with the City of Parramatta and Greater Sydney Commission to develop an Interim Land Use and Infrastructure Implementation Plan (the Interim Plan).
The Interim Plan outlines how we’re planning for a connected, vibrant city with more homes, jobs and essential services. It will guide redevelopment and identify the infrastructure needed for continued growth.
The Minister for Planning and Public Space has recently announced a new approach to precinct planning in NSW. This will mean that the Department will continue to prepare, finalise and maintain strategic plans for Greater Parramatta and Olympic Peninsula (GPOP). The new precinct will expand the previous boundaries of Greater Parramatta to align with the Greater Sydney Commission vision for GPOP.
The Greater Parramatta to the Olympic Peninsula (GPOP) area is a 6,000-hectare area at the core of the Central City, and the centre of Greater Sydney. The Greater Sydney Commission has released a Place-based Infrastructure Compact (PIC) for GPOP which seeks to better align growth with the provision of infrastructure and services. When finalised the PIC will play an important role in shaping the direction and staging of planning and growth in GPOP, including for Greater Parramatta.
The Department will prepare a new strategic plan to guide development in accordance with the PIC outcomes, working closely with other agencies to coordinate infrastructure and growth. After establishing the planning framework for GPOP, through a Strategic Plan, the Department will work collaboratively with the City of Parramatta Council and Cumberland Council to support them in undertaking the detailed planning, including the rezoning of the individual precincts.
