Greater Newcastle is expected to have 116,000 more people and 60,450 more dwellings by 2036. Nearly 95% of residents will live less than 30 minutes away from a strategic centre.
A thriving, liveable Greater Newcastle must include a place for the area’s many native plants and animals. The unique natural environment is one of the key reasons people choose to live in and visit the region.
The NSW Government’s vision for Greater Newcastle is to deliver the infrastructure, housing and jobs needed to cater for future population growth and to create vibrant, liveable, connected urban centres with green spaces and protected biodiversity.
Strategic conservation planning in Greater Newcastle will inform land use planning in the region and consider the local government areas of:
- Newcastle
- Lake Macquarie
- Port Stephens
- Maitland
- Cessnock.
