Toggerai Park is a major new recreational destination for Appin residents and visitors, transforming 17 hectares of former pastureland along Appin Road into a vibrant park set within a bushland landscape.
Located just 1 km north of Appin's town centre, Toggerai Park provides a space for the community to gather, play, and unwind among the natural beauty of the area.
The park was designed in close collaboration with the community, Wollondilly Shire Council, and other key stakeholders, and has been delivered under the Parks for People program.
Toggerai Park has been designed to celebrate and enhance its bushland setting, preserving existing vegetation across the site. The nature-based play spaces draw inspiration from the lyrebird, a totem animal of the Dharawal people, recognising the area's Aboriginal heritage and connection to Country.
The park includes a range of spaces for recreation, relaxation and community gatherings, with shaded picnic shelters, barbeques and accessible amenities encouraging visitors to spend time outdoors.
The main features of the park include:
- 1 km of mown walking trails
- pedestrian access from Appin Road and a dedicated car park
- nature-based play spaces, including a lyrebird play structure, flying fox and swings
- shaded seating areas, barbeque facilities, accessible amenities block, and bubblers
- preservation of existing vegetation and bushland across the site.

Design process

Step 1
The first step was to find out what could and couldn’t be done on the site. The top priority was to protect the biodiversity of the site and make the most of the natural setting.

The second step was to get input from the community and key stakeholders through a survey and interactive map. This informed the development of a draft design concept for the new park.

Step 3
The Department developed a draft concept design for feedback and further input and then developed more detailed designs for the new park based on feedback.

The fourth step was to share the details of the final plan for the new park in Appin.
