Supporting green, liveable, and connected communities

The Metropolitan Greenspace Program helps councils create vibrant neighbourhoods and sustainable communities across Greater Sydney and the Central Coast. It provides funding for projects that create high-quality green spaces – connecting town centres, transport hubs, and homes.

Funding open spaces since 1983

Since 1990, the Metropolitan Greenspace Program has provided more than $65 million to support over 680 council-led open space projects.

What the program supports

Eligible councils can apply for dollar-for-dollar grants for capital works and planning projects that improve open space, support housing supply and align with the Sydney or Central Coast Green Grid.

Capital works must be completed within 18 months and can include:

  • walking tracks and recreational or bicycle trails
  • new or upgraded parks and open spaces
  • bushland and environmental management or restoration
  • interpretive signage and educational programs.

Planning projects must lead to future capital works within 24 months and may cover:

  • open space strategies
  • plans of management
  • master plans.

Funding is provided through the Sydney Region Development Fund, administered by the Office of Strategic Lands.

Grant recipients

Applications for the 2024–2025 round were open for eligible councils from 12 February to 31 March 2025.

Almost $4 million in funding from the NSW Government has been awarded to 14 councils for 15 projects that will improve regionally significant open space, including park and nature upgrades.

In addition to this, local councils contributed over $4.9 million, and $282,108 came from other funding sources.

Read the Metropolitan Greenspace Program Guidelines 2024-2025 for more information about the latest round of funding.
