More than 100 public open-space projects across NSW have been approved as part of a $250 million legacy program launched in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Projects include new and improved walking and cycle paths, parks, trails, boardwalks, lookouts, foreshores, riverbanks, play spaces, civic plazas, and outdoor event spaces.
Local councils are encouraged to accelerate assessment of development applications (DAs) and rezonings to create development capacity and meet demand for housing and employment. We will be working with councils to deliver the projects in 2023.
Faster DA assessments will add to the state’s construction pipeline through to 2024 and build on the short-term results of our accelerated assessment program.
Speeding up local projects and providing new public space provides economic benefits. It also creates a legacy for future generations, matching increased development with broader, lasting public benefits.
To learn more information about the program, read the NSW Public Open Spaces Legacy Program Guidelines (PDF, 3.0 MB) or contact the team at [email protected].
Funding has been allocated to councils across NSW. Each council has different public and open space needs and varying land costs. Funding has been assigned differently to metropolitan developed councils, metropolitan fringe councils, regional cities, large rural councils and rural councils.
