The NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program is creating more than 100 new public open spaces for communities to discover, connect, play and enjoy for generations to come.
The $250 million investment in quality public open space by the NSW Government contributes to the growth of healthy and sustainable communities by promoting access to nature, culture, sport and recreation.
We are working in partnership with councils to deliver these new playspaces, bike tracks and trails, civic centres, walking paths and boardwalks across the state.
The program supports communities as they grow and change, creating infrastructure and public open space to meet future needs. The program was offered to NSW councils to help achieve faster development assessment times based on performance targets, improving housing supply and job generation.

Funding
Funding has been allocated to councils across New South Wales. Funding levels were determined on a council-by-council basis, as each council has different public and public open space needs and varying underlying land costs.
To be eligible for funding the council needed to commit to accelerate its median assessment timeframe for development applications by 20% between 1 September 2020 and 30 June 2021. Participating councils have reported up to a 30% improvement in assessment times, supporting a faster planning system for the people of NSW.
