Building and subdivision
Building regulation and certification provisions play a key role in underpinning the design, construction and safety of buildings in NSW.
Buildings
Building regulation and certification are important parts of the planning system in New South Wales.
Building certification
Building certifiers are needed to help support the development of 900,000 new homes in NSW over the next 20 years as our population grows.
Fire safety certification
A fire safety certificate is a document issued by or on behalf of the building owner(s) upon the completion of new building work.
Stage 6 – Get your Occupation Certificate
The Occupation Certificate authorises occupation and use of a new building or building section. It is the last step in the formal DA and construction process.
Building systems circulars
The department issues building systems circulars regarding matters and issues that relate to building codes and regulations.
Fire safety in buildings
The department supports many aspects of building and fire safety including the strengthening of fire safety certification for buildings.
Assess and regulate
We develop smart policy and assess the state’s most significant infrastructure projects.
Building Homes for NSW
The 2025-26 Budget builds on our historic reforms to deliver more homes for more people, with new construction incentives, strengthened planning and more skilled workers to get the homes people need built faster.
Building locations and heights
The location and position of buildings on the Waterloo south block will help to minimise the shadow falling on outdoor areas, existing homes and new homes.
