Data glossary

Approved for construction

Approved for construction means a construction certificate or Complying Development Certificate (CDC) has been issued for construction to commence. Data shows the number of dwellings with construction approval, regardless of the number of construction certificates (for example, a single certificate for a project to construct 30 apartments is counted as 30 dwellings). For more information on the building approvals dataset, ABS Building Approvals.

Approved for development

Provides an estimate of the number of new dwellings with development approval. In NSW, residential development approvals include planning permits issued from a Residential Local Development Application (LDA), a State Significant Development Application (SSDA), a Regionally Significant Development Application (RSDA) or a Complying Development Certificate.  Development types for residential LDAs include dwelling house, medium density housing, residential flat building, secondary dwelling, and shop top housing.

Data shows the number of dwelling units with development approval, regardless of the number of projects. Modification consents and reviews of determinations are excluded to avoid double-counting.

Lodged

Provides an estimate of the number of new dwellings lodged in residential development applications, including Residential Local Development Applications (LDA), a State Significant Development Applications (SSDA), a Regionally Significant Development Applications (RSDA) and Complying Development Certificates (CDC). Development types for residential LDAs include dwelling house, medium density housing, residential flat building, secondary dwelling, and shop-top housing.

Data shows the number of dwelling units lodged, regardless of the number of projects. Modification consents and reviews of determinations are excluded to avoid double-counting.

New homes completed

New homes completed is the gross number of dwellings completed, as reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

New homes completed is available for NSW only. For more information on the building activity dataset, please refer to ABS Building Activity.

Subdivision audit

The subdivision audit classifies lot activity at a point in time. It provides a snapshot of the short and medium-term pipeline of new lots. Data shows the number of lots at each stage of the subdivision pipeline, as at a point in time.

Greenfield lots and dwelling capacity

Greenfield lots and dwelling capacity provides a snapshot of rezoned greenfield areas at a point in time. Data shows the rezoned dwelling potential and the number of residential lots created since rezoning, as at a point in time.
