The NSW Government has prepared a Local Housing Strategy Guideline and Template (PDF, 6.5 MB) to support and guide councils to develop their local housing strategies.
Once Sydney Councils’ Local Housing Strategies are exhibited and finalised, local housing strategies are required to be sent to the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment for assessment and approval. For an update on council and the Department’s in preparing, assessment and approval of Sydney council strategies please see the Local Housing tracker on the planning portal.
The Department has developed a collaborative approval process to assess each council’s strategy and is now working with councils to resolve any issues and process to approval in a timely manner.
The process involves a rigorous assessment against the requirements outlined in the Local Housing Strategy Guideline and seeking advice from other state agencies, including the Greater Sydney Commission and Transport for NSW.
This is to ensure that each local housing strategy is consistent with relevant state government strategies and seeks to enable suitable types of housing in the right locations.
