World-class healthcare, new homes and jobs for the Illawarra Shoalhaven.
The Wollongong Health Precinct will become a world-class healthcare centre that meets the growing needs of the Illawarra Shoalhaven region and its surrounds.
The project reflects the NSW Government’s commitment to increasing housing and employment opportunities near transport hubs and existing infrastructure.
The Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure is working with NSW Health, Transport for NSW, and Wollongong City Council on planning for the precinct.
Wollongong Health Precinct Rezoning Proposal
The NSW Government will lead rezoning of the Wollongong Health Precinct under the State Significant Rezoning Policy.
State-led rezoning allows projects to be delivered faster by bringing together government agencies, councils and key stakeholders to resolve planning and infrastructure issues.
The proposed plans include:
- over 1,000 additional new homes with a diverse mix of housing for key workers
- over 10,000 new jobs
- redevelopment of Wollongong Public Hospital and a range of allied health services
- improved public space, new cafes, improved cycleways and footpaths.
The rezoning proposal will be exhibited for public feedback in 2026. Transport for NSW is also planning upgrades and improvements at Wollongong Station as part of its master plan. For more information, visit Wollongong Station Precinct.
Wollongong Health Precinct Strategy
The Wollongong Health Precinct Strategy was finalised on 20 February 2026. The strategy will guide growth of the precinct over the next 25 years and help shape the rezoning proposal.
The draft strategy was exhibited from 24 April to 11 June 2025. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback.
We have amended the structure plan in response to feedback to:
- change the land use intent west of the existing Wollongong Public Hospital car park and south of Crown Street from ‘Possible health facility expansion (subject to future planning)’ to ‘mid-rise housing and supporting health services’
- reduce the area identified for ‘Possible health facility expansion (subject to future planning)’ to the north of Wollongong Public Hospital, and add additional ‘mid-rise housing and supporting health services’. This change restores New Dapto Road and reflects further planning by NSW Health on the future redevelopment of Wollongong Public Hospital.
For more information about the final strategy, visit the NSW Planning Portal.
The strategy was informed by the Shaping Wollongong Health Precinct Strategy (PDF, 6.5 MB) developed by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure in collaboration with NSW Health, Transport for NSW, and Wollongong City Council.
We sought community and stakeholder feedback on the discussion paper from December 2023 to February 2024.
For a summary of the feedback we received, read the Engagement Outcomes Report (PDF, 1.7 MB).
